The LaLa List

The grandchild cometh.  Tomorrow is a big day.  LaLa is coming for a visit.  She has already been to visit the maternal side of the family, and with any luck, they have left some spoiling room for Northern Grandma and Grandpa.  We have been preparing for this visit for several weeks.  Let’s see.  Do I have everything?

Baby gates: Check
Door knob covers for Houdini: Check
Bathtub toys: Check
Stroller, just in case the one taken on the trip breaks down.  You can never be too prepared: Check
Crayons and coloring book: Check
Diapers: Check that out with mommy
Bag full of clothes, you know.  It might be rainy, cold, etc.  Northerners live differently than Southerners: Check
Ride-on toy.  Perfect for cruising around the kitchen while Grans cooks: Check
Rocking chair strategically placed in Gran’s room: Check
Books: Check
Cupboard filled with organic snacks: Check
Organic chocolate pudding for finger painting: Check
Two arms just waiting to hug: Check
WE ARE READY.
The reality is this:
She will arrive tired and hungry and the last person she will want near her is a complete stranger.  Skype just doesn’t make us familiar: Check
She will love writing on my walls: Check
She will never sit still long enough to be rocked, much less read to: Check
She will, undoubtedly, figure out how to unlock the gates and manipulate the door knob covers: Check
She will eat the finger paints: Check
She will pull out all of the pots and pans and spend hours putting on and taking off the lids: Check
We will probably have a heat wave: Check
All in all, I think we are in for a lovely visit: Check
My son wants me to make a dish with her that, when she comes back, she will be able to repeat.  It will be a tradition.  This simple dish requires only dumping and mixing:
THE LaLa DISH
 Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups of dried elbow,or rigatoni pasta
1 large (28oz) can of diced tomatoes in sauce
8-12 oz block of cheddar cheese ( I use 50% lite) cut into one inch dice
Chicken or vegetable broth
1 tsp dried oregano
a pinch of salt and pepper
Instructions:
  • Dump everything except the broth into a deep, greased casserole dish
  • Make sure all of the dried pasta is covered.  If it isn’t, use about 1/2 c broth to cover
  • Cover the dish with foil
  • Place dish in a 375 degree oven and cook for about 40-45 minutes.  uncover and cook about 5 minutes more
This will be our tradition, until she is old enough to handle something more.
This visit will be such fun: Check!
